Legislation has just been passed to continue the multi-agency National Earthquake Hazards Reduction program for at least 5 more years. authorizing $735 million in additional funds through 2023. The program supports research in the development of an early warning system and identifying areas susceptible to damage from liquefaction, landslides and other seismic induced hazards. Additionally, it helps support a FEMA grant program given to states for mitigation, preparedness and response plans.

This week is the International Week of Science and Peace. First observed in 1986 as part of the UN’s International Year of Peace, efforts have continued annually due to broad global participation. The initiative calls for relevant institutions, governments and other organizations to sponsor activities generating greater awareness on the link between scientific progress and peace; And urges greater international cooperation in scientific and academic communities.
