News Update: Nine Civilians Die at Attack on Serena Hotel in Kabul

Several teenage Taliban gunmen slipped into the Serena Hotel in Kabul on Thursday, March 20th, 2014.  Two young girls and seven others were killed in the attack. Four of the victims were foreigners from Canada, India, New Zealand, and Pakistan.  The attack that appears to have been planned as part of a larger effort to undermine the upcoming presidential elections.  Election monitors were among the guests at the hotel.

Attackers were armed with only six small handguns that were hidden in their shoes.  The attackers waited for over three hours before beginning their attack.  Armed with this small group of weapons, the attack went on for over two hours.  During the attack, hundreds of staff and guests took refuge in a bunker or were evacuated from the building.
